Always Under the Influence

From as early as I can remember, design always held a special place in my heart. Although I lacked the terminology to articulate it formally, I was always drawn to things that were both visually appealing and functional.  In middle school I became obsessed with skateboarding and my worldview was never the same again.  Although it was new to me, it felt so familiar.  In that domain existed an endless valley of influence and inspiration ranging from art, music, fashion, and even food.  Having grown up in California, I eventually moved to South Dakota to start a family, where I welcomed my first child. Alongside my passion for design, I've always found joy in cooking. Over the past decade, I've honed my culinary and customer service skills while working in restaurants, learning essential attributes like adaptability, patience and empathy.

After working in hospitality, I've come to recognize that the fundamental responsibility of a restaurant worker is to act as a middleman between the customer and their overall dining experience. A well-crafted dining experience plays a significant role in setting the tone for a customer's day or evening, and can significantly impact their experience for the better or worse.  With time well spent serving the people, I decided to serve them in a different way and take the step towards a future in design.
